A Grade II listed building that boasts a fascinating story. In Victoria’s reign it was owned by a wine merchant, becoming one of Cambridge’s earliest telephone exchanges in 1892. A tobacconist for much of the twentieth century, in 1973 it became the much-loved Don Pasquale, a traditional Italian restaurant that established itself as a Cambridge institution for the next few decades under the Benedetto family.
Whilst the building dates back to the late 18th century, traders and a daily outdoor market have been operating at Market Hill since Saxon times. Before the Fens were drained, ships and barges laden with fish, salt, fruit, vegetables and wine used to sail from King’s Lynn all the way to Cambridge.
Market House will breathe new life into this heritage building in the heart of the city, following on from the legacy left by previous occupants and continuing to serve the community as a space to come together.
